Qigong — Earth, Water, Fire
Begin by grounding: stand with feet hip-width, knees soft, tailbone gently tucked. Breathe slowly into the lower belly. Feel the Earth beneath you supporting every inhale and exhale.
Earth: Stabilize and root
Intention: cultivate a steady foundation for Qi to accumulate and circulate.
Movement: slow, weighted shifts of the hips and pelvis; pressing palms downward as if feeling for the ground’s texture.
Breath: slow inhalation into the lower dantian, pause, long exhale releasing tension into the earth.
Effect: strengthens the spleen/earth resonance — stability, digestion, and centred presence. Stay here for several cycles until you sense solidity and slower heart rhythm.
Water: welcome Spring’s returning element
Intention: invite fluidity and receptivity; open channels for smoother Qi flow as the season thaws.
Movement: flowing, undulating motions from the hips through the spine and arms; imagine a river bending and yielding, palms tracing soft arcs.
Breath: longer, boat-like breaths that roll from low belly upward and cascade down on the exhale.
Visualization: see deep blue-black water pooling in the lower dantian, then branching like streams through the meridians, cooling and lubricating joints and organs.
Effect: nourishes kidney and bladder energy—emotional resilience, adaptability, and deeper rest. Move through this phase until movements feel effortless and sensations of warmth or coolness balance.
Fire: refine and circulate
Intention: transform and ignite clear, vibrant Qi without overheating—use refined warmth to move and refine.
Movement: smaller, purposeful circling of the torso, gentle tapping along the chest and upper back, palms moving in spirals to awaken the heart center.
Breath: shorter, invigorating exhales paired with calm inhales; micro-activations to encourage upward lift.
Visualization: a steady inner flame in the chest that refines murky energy into bright Qi, sending light into the limbs.
Effect: supports heart and small intestine resonance—clarity, joy, and discernment. Keep the fire soft and bright rather than fierce.
Circulation of Qi — sequence to practice (8–12 minutes)
Ground (Earth): 2–3 minutes of weighted standing and belly breaths to collect Qi.
Flow (Water): 3–5 minutes of undulating spine and arm arcs, allowing Qi to move smoothly through channels.
Refine (Fire): 2–4 minutes of spirals and chest activations to purify and uplift Qi.
Integrate: return to stillness; hands resting over the lower dantian. Breathe 6–8 deep cycles, sensing a continuous loop: Earth gathers, Water carries, Fire refines.
Close: seal the practice by bringing hands to the heart in gratitude, then to the forehead and lower dantian briefly.
Practical tips
Move at a pace that keeps breath connected to motion. If breath breaks, slow down.
Use warm, fluid clothing—avoid constriction at the waist.
If emotions arise during the Water phase, allow them to flow without holding; the Earth phase will help settle afterward.
For a deeper spring welcome, diffuse a cleansing resin incense or burn a small candle during the Water practice to support receptivity and calm.
Beginner modification: sit and focus on Earth and Water phases until comfortable adding Fire.
Closing intention End with a simple affirmation: “I am rooted, I flow, I shine.” Carry this sequence into your day to welcome spring’s watery renewal while staying grounded and luminous.
